Inside Stephen Tibbo’s New Dolby Atmos Studio in LA

Three-time Emmy Award-winning sound mixer Stephen Tibbo of Tibbo Sound has opened a new Dolby Atmos mix studio in Los Angeles, expanding his post capabilities as demand for immersive audio continues to grow

The facility - designed by Carl Yanchar with project management by Danny Fasold - was developed as an upgrade to Tibbo’s previous space, which he said had become limiting as Atmos work increased. “As more Atmos projects came in, I realised I needed a room that could fully support that workflow,” says Tibbo. He spent two years on planning, permitting and construction before the studio became fully operational.

The room is built around a 9.1.4 loudspeaker configuration featuring JBL Professional 7 Series monitors (708i models for the front and surround channels and 705i units for the height channels) and dual JBL cinema subwoofers. “The JBL 7 Series monitors translate really well and offer a ton of value for their cost and size,” Tibbo says. “I had mixed on them a lot at other studios, so when Danny suggested we think about them, it was an easy decision.”

System power and tuning are handled by Crown DCi amplifiers, while audio routing is managed through an Avid MTRX interface with Dante integration via BSS BLU-DAN.

According to Fasold, achieving Dolby certification required detailed planning and alignment. “Stephen’s experience on the JBL 7 Series monitors really drove this decision,” he explains. “They’re very commonly used in post studios, and they work extremely well in Atmos environments. Combined with the Crown DCi amps, we were able to time-align and tune the system to meet Dolby’s exacting standards.”

For ADR sessions, Tibbo relies on AKG K371 headphones. “The AKGs are quiet and reliable. When actors move during ADR, you don’t hear creaks or noise leaking through. They let us focus completely on performance.”

The build faced the typical challenges of high-end construction in Los Angeles, including an extended permitting process and budget constraints, but the team delivered the studio to spec and on schedule. Since opening, the room has already been busy with feature film and episodic work.
