Soho Theatre Walthamstow upgrades with JBL VTX-Series

The Opportunity

The historic Soho Theatre in Walthamstow—originally opened in 1930 as the Granada Cinema and once home to performances by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Duke Ellington—was slated for restoration after closing as a cinema in 2003. Waltham Forest Council, who purchased the building in 2019 as part of the council’s London Borough of Culture legacy commitment, saw an opportunity to preserve one of London’s great cultural landmarks while transforming it into a world-class live performance venue. Following years of community advocacy and planning, the newly renamed Soho Theatre Walthamstow required an audio system that would complement the building’s architectural heritage, meet the demands of modern productions, and serve audiences of up to 960 people with exceptional sound quality and coverage.

The Solution

Appointed by main contractor Willmott Dixon Interiors, LSI Projects delivered the theatre’s specialist sound and communications infrastructure as specified by Theatre Projects Consultants. The system design centered on JBL Professional’s VTX A Series, featuring left-right flown arrays of eight VTX A8 line array elements with two VTX B18 subwoofers, supported by six JBL AC18 front fills and four JBL PRX812 active loudspeakers for stage monitoring. The entire system is powered by Crown I-Tech 4×3500HD amplifiers.

“From my perspective, it offered an excellent balance of sound quality, performance, and scalability,” said Pablo Riñón-Caballero, Senior Consultant, Theatre Projects. “The VTX A8 was a perfect match for this venue.”

“The VTX A Series systems are great,” added Stuart Dingwall, Business Development Manager, LSI Projects. “The rigging is superb and the configuration of the DSP within the Crown amps is simplicity itself. Most importantly, it sounds great.”

Additional support came from HARMAN Professional and exclusive UK distributor Live Technology, who provided assistance from initial design through commissioning, including JBL’s Venue Synthesis software. The venue also invested in four JBL EON One MKII portable PA systems for use in auxiliary spaces such as the bar and foyer.

The Result

The newly opened Soho Theatre Walthamstow now features a JBL Professional VTX system that delivers clear, uniform coverage and musical transparency across the entire 960-seat auditorium. The combination of JBL loudspeakers and Crown amplifiers provides the venue with a scalable, rider-ready system capable of handling diverse programming—from comedy and concerts to theatrical productions.

Riñón-Caballero emphasised the importance of support in achieving the project’s success: “It is crucial that the manufacturer and distributor are available to assist the venue and its technical team, providing training, guidance, and ongoing support to ensure the system is correctly set up, properly maintained, and built to last. JBL and Live Technology have consistently proved top-notch in this regard.”

With its new audio infrastructure, Soho Theatre Walthamstow is equipped to welcome more than 400,000 visitors annually and continue its mission of bringing world-class performance to the local community—honoring its cinematic heritage while shaping London’s next generation of live entertainment.
